Character Name: Ragetti
Canon: Pirates of the Caribbean
Canon Point: Post-At World's End
History: beep
Personality:
▶ HALF OF A WHOLE. What's the first thing you notice about Ragetti? No, after the eye. Most likely, it's that he's never seen out of the company of his best friend Pintel. The exact nature of their relationship is unspecified (are they relatives? Lovers? Merely two halves of the same idiot?), but it's clear that they exist as a duo before anything else. As far as Ragetti's concerned, being the second name in "Pintel and Ragetti" suits him fine, because he's often dependent on Pintel for direction. Of the two, Pintel is the... "brains" may be too strong a word... while Ragetti is often content to merely do as he's told, although he starts speaking his own mind more often as the series progresses. How would he fare without any of Pintel's questionable guidance to fall back on? Well, that's what this murdergame is for!
▶ SURPRISINGLY SMART? Ragetti may not have two brain cells to rub together, but a quite frankly astonishing amount of other miscellanea has taken up space in that head of his. He's somehow aware of the original Scandinavian pronunciation of the word "kraken" (it's "kraw-ken", not "kray-ken", FYI) and that a kraken is not a fish but a cephalopod (a classification that didn't even exist in 1729). When three of his companions begin fighting over treasure, he rattles off an immaculately coherent summary of their motives in an instant. When the question "What vexes all men?" is posed, two of his crewmates offer "The sea?" and "Sums?", while Ragetti, for his part, busts out a completely straight-faced "The dichotomy of good and evil." Where does he get this stuff?
▶ COWARDLY. There are pirates who are brave and bold and daring, who swash and buckle with the best of them. And then there are pirates whose greatest priority is saving their own skins. Guess which category Ragetti falls into! Somehow, despite having spent a full ten years as a supernatural creature himself, Ragetti does especially poorly when faced with monsters, fish-people, and the other assorted weirdos spat out by the Caribbean. As for how he takes it when the Kraken shows up, I'll just let this face tell the story (though, to be fair, it's very large). But even when the threats he's facing are mundane in nature, his first instinct is to get as far away as possible. He can fight, if he has to, but either something truly important has to be at stake or he has to have exhausted all other options, because otherwise he's absolutely booking it.
▶ WEIRD SENSE OF FUN. I'm sure there's a pithier title for this one, but oh well. Ragetti has an almost childlike sense of fun and seems to get an honest kick out of a lot of the wacky situations he ends up in. Like the time he and Pintel have to wear dresses to distract the Navy, and while Pintel's not too pleased about the choice of attire, Ragetti giggles and bats his eyes coyly and tells Pintel he looks nice. Or the time they come across the corpse of the Kraken, and he and Pintel immediately start riffing on the idea of turning it into a tourist trap. ("We could serve up a slice as a souvenir!") Spooky jar of what appear to be human eyeballs hanging in the creepy voodoo woman's hut? Ragetti's delighted. This little weirdo.
▶ HE'S TRYING. For someone who entered the first movie firmly on the side of the Bad Pirates, Ragetti's been making an admirably conscious effort to better himself. At some point between being arrested and breaking out of jail, he finds religion, and from then on, everything he does is weighed against the question of how good it'll get him in with Jesus. (As he sensibly points out, now that he and Pintel can actually die, they probably ought to spare a thought for the state of their souls when they do.) Of course, one of the first things he does as a free man is help steal a ship, but... look, it's a process. As time goes on, perhaps despite himself, he becomes more accustomed to doing good for its own sake. When the Kraken attacks the Black Pearl and snags Elizabeth in one of its tentacles, an obviously terrified Ragetti is there to hack the tentacle in two and save her life. And when Captain Jack meets his untimely end, Ragetti joins in on a treacherous trek to the very afterlife to bring him back. In fact, when it's revealed that most of the rest of the crew had their own ulterior motives for rescuing Jack, and Jack asks whether anyone had come just because they missed him, Ragetti is one of a very few to raise their hands. Altruism. It suits him.
...And then he joins in a mutiny against Jack, again, and helps steal his ship, again. Look. It's a process.
Criminal Status: Well, he's a pirate, for one thing, which automatically makes him a dangerous criminal in the eyes of the British Navy. The "dangerous" part in this case is... questionable, but yes, Ragetti has personally committed quite a few crimes during the course of his career on the high seas. They include:
- Raiding, pillaging, and all the rest of the general pirate agenda
- Mutiny (twice)
- Kidnapping
- Dognapping
- Prison break
- Manslaughter
- Fishmanslaughter
Akudama Title: I mean... is "Pirate" too obvious?
Physiology: Onetime skeleton curse notwithstanding, Ragetti is currently a completely normal human, with his only particularly special feature being the wooden eye. Nothing supernatural.
Powers/Abilities: Ragetti has no supernatural abilities, and barely any regular abilities, if I'm being honest. But his mundane skillset does include:
▶ SWORDPLAY. Standard level for a pirate of his experience, but he can hold his own in a swordfight.
▶ GUNPLAY. Similarly to the above, he knows his way around a pistol and is a decent shot, considering the whole depth perception thing.
▶ OBSCURE SITUATIONAL KNOWLEDGE. As described in the Personality section, for an indisputable idiot, Ragetti has the ability to pull out from god-knows-where a lot of random knowledge he really shouldn't have access to. This will generally only be deployed when it's funny.
▶ BALANCING THINGS. Okay, scraping the bottom of the barrel a little here, but he can balance a shovel upright on one hand! That's cool, right?
▶ SPEAKING TO A LOVER. Somehow, this ends up being his big damn heroic moment in the whole series. The ritual for releasing a sea goddess from human form specifies that you say the magic words "as if to a lover", and bless his heart, Ragetti makes that goddess swoon.
Items/Companions:
On hand:
▶ CUTLASS. Wielded lefty.
▶ PISTOL. Also usable as a club!
▶ BIBLE. He can't read it.
Black Market:
▶ JACK THE MONKEY. An undead monkey! Top that! This little fella turns into a skeleton under direct moonlight and looks extremely dapper in his tiny pirate outfit, yes he does.
▶ WOODEN EYE. It's another wooden eye! For... if Ragetti loses his current one? The two are hand-carved and bear slight differences, if you look closely.
▶ GOLD COIN. One of 882 identical pieces of Aztec gold, palm-sized with a skull motif. Probably won't lay a horrible curse on the buyer, but...
▶ COMPASS. This compass doesn't point north. It does, however, point to what you want most in the world. Which is almost as good.
Murder Motives: Threats to the lives of his crewmates, especially Pintel. Threats to his own life. Treasure of sufficient amount and shininess to tempt his already weak will. An eye that actually fits and is made of glass.
Killer/Victim Consideration: Moderate victim preference but will try my best at either!
First Case Consideration/Prize: If necessary (to both)
Gift Consideration: Yes please! He needs it.
